After touring and surveying various rural and urban households regarding their consumption pattern, Soham, Kavita and Krishna were invited to watch international hockey championship. The match started with higher ranked team dominating and scoring goals in first half. The lower ranked team fought back and equalized but in ten minutes before the full time, higher ranked team scored the goal and won the match.
Kavita asked Krishna that why lower ranked team could not win the match. Krishna explained that victory and defeat is not only a matter of skills, game strategy but it is also a question of attitude. The lower ranked team was overwhelmed by the higher ranking of other team and conceded goals in first half. Though lower ranked team fought back in second half, but never had the belief and confidence that they can beat higher ranked team. This is the reason of their defeat.
Krishna himself was an excellent hockey player and played as a center half. Krishna further elaborated to Kavita that hockey is a game of high level fitness, skills, strategy and is also very much physical game. The winning strategy of his team used to be 4-4-2 formation with solid defense. Krishna’s team was fast on moves; they can attack rival goal post and defend their goal post in tandem. Players had good understanding and had superb hockey skills. Krishna said that their team was never dependent on few players; rather they had a bunch of excellent players who were fit and had superb hockey skills.
Krishna’s team’s strategy used to be solid in defense, lethal and fast in attack. Krishna recounted that his team had Ninety percent accuracy in converting penalty corners and he hardly remembered a time when they missed a penalty stroke. They won few matches on penalty shoot-out. Krishna said that his team always used to sparkle with confidence and had the belief that, whoever may be the opponent and whatever is the score, they can always pull up a win before the completion of match time. Krishna told Kavita that the reason of the success of his team was good team work, never missing the opportunity to score, rock solid defense with one of the best goal keeper and terrific defenders. Krishna said that his team was not having any specialist, rather players were quite versatile and many times defenders added up as forwards and scored some of the brilliant goals. Krishna team believed in total hockey and players were quite versatile to play in any position and do well at match. Krishna said that his team was both physically fit and mentally tough.
Kavita understood that to win any hockey match or any hockey championship, you need good team work, excellent game skills, positive attitude, self-belief, game strategy which will differ according to opponent and above all good understanding and playing as a team and not missing a single chance to score goals. For team work it is said that 1+1 is not equal to 2, rather 1+1 is equal to 11.
