Understanding the character's goals and motivations

While it is often easy to give a physical description to most characters in a novel, this often requires a second look. Good authors will often use this as a way of telling the reader so much more. Getting a picture in the readers head of what a character looks like is important, but giving the reader an insight into their soul is a totally different  skill.

Still, every reader will come away with a different image of what the character looks like and what kind of person they really are. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since it helps all readers relate to a story on a more personal level. It is important, however, for any misconceptions to be avoided, if possible.

Understanding minor characters

Other than the major characters that most readers follow intensely, the  real story can often be found in the minor characters, which can also be called side characters, support characters, occasional characters, or any of another dozen names. Are all of these type characterizations different? You bet there is!

A minor character generally appears throughout a novel, and is a way to reveal information about the main character that would be hard, if not akward for them to reveal themselves. They are the friends and adversaries that make the main character face reality, and bring up conflicts the main character would love to avoid.

Main book character analysis

Main character analysis

A story has many characters, and they all have a role to play. The main character can have many names such as hero and heroine in a romance to protagonist and antagonist, where everyone has a point of view and a goal–be it bad or good.  While the definition can change, say for example, when you have multiple characters in a family saga, these are the people that the author wants the reader to concentrate on and follow closely.

One of the first keys in understanding a character could be the name itself. It should, but does not necessarily have to, give the gender, nationality, perhaps time period the name was used, and a hint as to what kind of character we are talking about. The author selected that particular name for a reason, and it is up to the reader to understand why.
